U13 SJCF Review

Overall a really positive week for our U13’s, many playing their first SJCF games, with two wins and two losses.

Match 1: lost to Pagham by 41 runs

Bowling first we let a very good start go with some wayward bowling and too many fielding errors which left us with a hefty 198 runs to chase. We started our innings well and at 106 for 2 we looked in good shape. However a batting collapse losing 7 for 24 runs left us 41 runs short.

Match 2: beat Barns Green by 6 wkts

A dramatic turn around in our bowling against Barns Green, skittling them out for just 60 with some fine bowling, tight fielding, 3 stunning catches and 2 sharp runouts. Despite a little stumble we won by 6 wkts.

Match 3: beat Pagham by 8 wkts

Despite some strong batting from the opposition they were never able to score freely and after a couple of wickets we were able to keep the pressure on. The wickets kept falling, 4 for Max and 3 for Miles, and we limited them to 127 all out. A swashbuckling 49 from Miles and 29no from Jacob saw us home by 8 wkts.

Match 4: lost to Keymer and Hassocks by 1 wkt

Arguably our worst batting performance of the season saw us all out for 84. However, the pitch was unpredictable and our never say die spirit was unrelenting. Despite a very low run rate against our tight bowling, the opposition creeped to 62 for 3. However 6 wkts for 17 runs meant they needed 6 runs for their last wkt and it was very tense. It wasn’t to be and instead of coming 3rd in the league we finished mid table which was still a great effort.

Overall, this was a great (and for a few players, new) experience. The team developed as a unit with some great camaraderie and they were so supportive and encouraging of each other. There was some excellent fielding and a number of outstanding catches. Whilst there were some great individual batting performances, we need to work on the strength in depth of our batting. The most important takeaway was the superb way in which our players conducted themselves on and off the field and we are very proud of the way they represented their club. They will definitely grow from here.
